Umphrey’s McGee releases DVD; summer tour dates set

2009-05-28

THIS JUNE, UMPHREY’S McGEE BRINGS THEIR INNOVATIVE AND
ENERGETIC LIVE SHOW TO LIVING ROOMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH THE DVD RELEASE OF THEIR SOUNDSTAGE PERFORMANCE:

UMPHREY’S McGEE - LIVE

UMPHREY’S MCGEES NEW STUDIO ALBUM, MANTIS, IS NOW AVAILABLE IN EUROPE

LOOK FOR THE BAND ON TOUR,
INCLUDING FESTIVAL STOPS, A SHORT RUN CO-BILL WITH MATISYAHU,
AND TWO NIGHTS WITH DAVE MATTHEWS BAND

Umphrey’s McGee is gearing up for a busy summer. On June 2nd the band releases their new DVD, Umphrey’s McGee - Live. Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS’s Soundstage, Umphrey’s McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered this past February. Also this summer, Umphrey’s McGee celebrates the European release of their highly acclaimed new studio album, Mantis. Look for the band on tour this summer, including a just-announced ROTHBURY appearance, a run of co-bill dates with Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, and even some stops at Chicago’s baseball fields (it wouldn’t be summer for Umphrey’s McGee without baseball!).

Legendary on the live music circuit, Chicago-based Umphrey’s McGee has perfected the art of progressive improvisation. With swirling guitar textures, multi-faceted arrangements and their signature blend of power and finesse, the sextet brings jamming to a new level. During the summer of 2007, Umphrey’s McGee came home to Chicago to record a special live performance for the award-winning PBS music series Soundstage at WTTW’s Grainger Studio. UMPHREY’S McGEE - LIVE features over two hours of dazzling music presented in High-Definition and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, plus two bonus tracks (including “Made to Measure” off their most recent studio album Mantis). A visual showcase of the band’s spontaneity and innovative prowess, UMPHREY’S McGEE - LIVE, is a must-own for all music enthusiasts and progressive rock fans, and is available in stores and online for $19.99 SRP.

Also this summer, Umphrey’s McGee’s skips across the pond with the European release of their new studio album, Mantis. The special 2-disc European edition of Mantis, released by Floating World Records/Evangeline, is now available in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Scandanavia, and the UK. Mantis is Umphrey’s fifth studio release, and their most successful to date. Here’s what U.S. critics had to say:

“…the sleekly constructed tunes…sparkle with a sweetness and soul that’s more than the sum of their influences.”- Entertainment Weekly

“…meticulous… If complexity is the standard by which it should be judged, Mantis warranted the buildup [of its release].” - New York Times

“A beautiful music gumbo… The band pulls off the trans-genre trick without a hitch.”
- Associated Press

“…their slickest and most ambitious tunes yet.” - Rolling Stone

Look for Umphrey’s McGee on tour this summer, including an unlikely pairing - Notre Dame alums Umphrey’s McGee with Hasidic reggae-man Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, plus festival stops including ROTHBURY, All Good, High Sierra and others.

Of personal note for the Chicago natives are their confirmed appearances at Chicago’s baseball fields. The band will sing the National Anthem and “God Bless America” at Wrigley Field on Sunday, May 31st, when the Cubs host playoff rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then, on June 8th, the band heads to the South Side for their fifth performance at US Cellular Field for the Chicago White Sox versus the Detroit Tigers. On this official “Umphrey’s McGee Fan Appreciation Night,” the band will deliver a three-song acoustic set from home plate, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Need more baseball? Catch Umphrey’s McGee’s music in a new movie about the Chicago Cubs. Titled “We Believe,” the movie will be out in late spring and will premiere at the Chicago Theater on June 12th.

3rDegree added to ProgDay ‘09 lineup

2009-05-26

ProgDay is very happy to announce one of the east coast’s best modern progressive rock bands, 3RDEGREE, to the Storybook Farm Stage. 3RDEGREE hail from New Jersey with a history that dates back to 1990 when founding members bassist/keys man ROBERT JAMES PASHMAN joined with drummer ROB DURHAM to create what they called “challenging music to play with a singable calling card.” Guitarist PAT KLIESCH joined the band several months later and their debut album, “The World In Which We Live,” was released in 1993. Although “World” was well received and the band gigged all over the east coast, it was felt that the missing element was having a world class vocalist in the mix. Enter GEORGE DOBBS, a stirring front man and vocalist who also played keyboards. The result of this pairing was “Human Interest Story” in 1995. The band again gigged to promote the album, playing well known clubs on the east coast circuit. Unfortunately, due to several factors, the band decided to call it quits in 1997 after a farewell gig at the famed CBGB’s in New York City.

This could have been the end of the story, but in 2005 three of the band’s original members met up and decided that it was time to make music again. The culmination of this meeting was a triumphant return to the live stage at THE NEW JERSEY PROGHOUSE in April of 2007. The show was filmed and released as a live DVD and album. The band quickly got back to work and released their first new album in over a decade with “Narrow-Caster” in 2008. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive with many praising the album as one of the best modern prog albums in years. 3RDEGREE will be sure to rock the field on Labor Day Weekend as they make their first festival appearance.

ProgDay is the world’s longest running progressive rock event. The 15th edition will take place on September 5th & 6th, 2009, at beautiful Storybook Farm near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. 3RDEGREE (USA) joins OZRIC TENTACLES (UK), MÖRGLBL (France), QUI (Japan) and FRENCH TV (USA) for another great weekend of the best in progressive music! For more information and to hear music from all of this year’s ProgDay bands, please visit us at www.progday. com.

Poland’s Believe to issue new album in August

Believe, Polish progressive rock band, is in the final stage of their work on their third studio album entitled “This Bread Is Mine”. It will be the band’s first release with Karol Wróblewski as the vocalist. The new material is currently mixed with the help of a very experienced producer Włodek Kowalczyk.

“This Bread Is Mine” will be released by Metal Mind Productions in early August. The standard edition will feature 11 tracks. A bonus track will be added to the digipak edition. Full details to be announced soon.

Believe - an outstanding art-rock act formed by the guitarist Mirek Gi, the former leader and composer of Polish prog-rock legend Collage. Believe’s debut album “Hope to See Another Day” (2006) received very good reviews from both media and fans. The music appealed to the lovers of the old Collage but also to the fans of Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Riverside. The follow-up album entitled “Yesterday Is A Friend” (2008) brought powerful sound full of faith and melody and gained them many new fans. In July 2008 Metal Mind Productions released the band’s first DVD entitled “Hope To See Another Day Live”.

Magic Pie announced for ROSFest 2010

2009-05-24

RoSfest is pleased to annouce Magic Pie back to the RoSfest stage as one of our headliners for 2010. The band will play the headlining slot on Sunday night, May 2nd, 2010.

The band was established in 2001 and consists of Kim Stenberg (guitars), Eirik Hanssen (lead vocals, acc. guitar), Gilbert Marshall (organ, keyboards, lead vocals), Eirikur Hauksson (lead vocals, acc guitar), Lars Petter Holstad (bass guitar) and Jan T. Johannessen (drums).

The characteristic and unique Magic Pie sound is founded on strong melodious songs, blended by powerful vocal arrangements, sparkling guitar riffs, 70’s organ and synths, and solid bass-drumwork. The music embraces a wide spectrum of styles, changing from the softest emotional piece to the more heavy metal riffs.

Even if the band has it’s unique sound and signature, influences from Spock’s Beard, Deep Purple, Yes, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Flower Kings and Uriah Heep is perceptible in the musical “pie”.

The band signed with Swedish record label “Progress Records” in 2005 and released their first album “Motions of Desire” the same year. In 2007 they released their follow-up and second album “Circus of Life”. The total response for the albums has been overwhelming by both musical critics and audience all over the world, and their live performances equal to the musicianship presented in the studiowork.

The band is actively working on their new studio album and it should be ready in time for RoSfest.

During the recent years the band has performed with extreme success at various locations and festivals in USA, Sweden and Norway, peaking at their performance at Sweden Rock Festival 2007.

Dear all,
Unfortunately, we’re on the lookout for a new keyboarder….again! Since
I doubt that any of our international listeners can help, I’m just
asking you to keep your fingers crossed: perhaps a suitable replacement
will show up soon. In the meantime, we’ll record a CD featuring 5 new,
rockier tracks. We’re hoping to release the CD sometime in late
summer/autumn, and I’ll let you know as soon as we’ve uploaded
soundsamples etc.
All the best,

Pat Moraz memorializes Robert Moog

2009-05-23

Patrick Moraz Shares Sounds and Sights in Honor of Bob’s 75th Birthday

Today marks Bob’s 75th birthday. Thursday night we celebrated his life and legacy at the Orange Peel in Asheville at Enter the Mind of Moog: Celebrating Bob’s 75th Birthday with a live recording session, interactive exhibits, the installation of the MiniMoogseum and much more. Hundreds of enthusiastic attendees joined us and enjoyed a sonic playground replete with Theremins, Moogerfoogers and synthesizers. Wheat Williams, one of our steadfast volunteers, came up from Atlanta to attend the event and blogged live from our site. Check out his reports here. Thanks to all of the volunteers, musicians and attendees for making the evening a fitting tribute and a great success.

Today we celebrate Bob’s birthday with Patrick Moraz, a brilliant musician, long-time Moog user and Bob’s close friend. In honor of Bob’s 75th birthday, Patrick has offered to share some of his life’s work to help support the Bob Moog Foundation and celebrate the life of the pioneer that helped shape his sound. Patrick (Mainhorse, Refugee, Yes, Moody Blues) has had a long career marked by prolific performing and composing in genres that stretch from progressive rock to electronica to jazz fusion.

Patrick, who was has been a Moog endorser throughout his career, has played many a Moog and was the owner of a rare dual manual minimoog which he had designed to his own specifications and which he played from 1975, specifically for the Relayer tour with Yes until the end of the 80s while still in The Moody Blues, as well as for all his solo-albums recordings.

In his rise as a virtuoso keyboardist in the mid-70s, Patrick worked closely with Bob testing the Polymoog and Macromoog. He visited the Moog Music factory, then located in Williamsville, NY and Bob visited Patrick in Switzerland to help him with the programming and tweaking of the Polymoog for Patrick’s upcoming album Story of I.

Today we are offering a rare and wonderful photo of Bob and Patrick during that period of
collaboration. In this particular photo, Bob and Patrick are walking through a field behind the Williamsville factory on their way to Patrick’s photoshoot with the Macromoog and Polymoog. Patrick has the Macromoog prototype slung over his shoulder. To view the photo, and others from that day, please see our blog.

In February, Patrick released his most recent album Change of Space. Patrick notes “Change of Space” is a collection of songs and instrumental pieces not previously released which I finished composing, recording, mixing and polishing over a period of about 14 years.”
The CD offers three piece instrumentals as well as collaborative works with other highly regarded musicians.

In honor of Bob’s 75th birthday, we are offering Patrick’s Change of Space and the photo of Bob and Patrick walking through the field with the Macromoog, autographed by Patrick for a donation of $75.00. Donate here today; availability is limited to the first 25 people.

“Dear Bob, wherever you are in the Cosmos, I wish you a very Happy Birthday and a great ride on the “centrifugal beaches of Infinity”, on Your Journey around and across the Universe!
You have definitely left an indelible mark on my mind and your sensitivity in all things humans always fascinated me, especially for a scientist and inventor of your caliber!” Happy 75th Birthday, my Friend!”
